Stirring consciousness –Coexistence of Myths,Nature and Humanity

As a type of human activity for development, which will not only land reclamation alters the shape of coastlines, but also has a profound impact on the existing ecological structure and environment as well as the landscape and culture of a city. This exhibition leads the audience into a world of mythology and reality. A brand new perspective is utilized to examine the relationship between humans and nature. Hangzhou artist Liu Yi has been to Macao twice for resident research in 2023, she uses the entry point of Macao’s marine culture, with a creative and inspirational perspective, alongside multiple art forms like video installations and painting, explores multi-dimensional perspectives of natural ecology, ancient mythology and anthropology.

As a form of civilization, maritime civilization first emerged in the myths and legends of ancestors, which are people’s fantasies about nature and social forms, also are an unconscious way of artistic creation, and also reflect people’s awe of nature. The works of Liu Yi are based on 15 myths and legends concerning various characters from coral girls to the ocean guardian. These tales closely link humans to the ocean, from the reverence for nature and the search for harmony and coexistence in the ancient mythology, to the desires of controlling nature due to the development of modern technology, Liu’s works underscore the subtle relationship between humans and nature. Moreover, the artist also has in-depth reflection on the urban history, culture and identity of Macao. The artist hopes that the audience will consider the role and responsibilities of humans in nature when appreciating the works, and mull over the ultimate emotional belonging of humans. We all hope to strike a balance between urban development and conservation.
